TOP JOB SEARCH MISTAKES

1. Overselling/Underselling. Remember it isn't only about what you want, but what the employer is looking for.

2. Misplaced Blame. Placing blame on why you haven't found a job yet can cause you to lose focus very quickly and your attitude becomes negative which can carry with you. Try to keep a positive outlook, the right opportunity will eventually present itself.

3. Undiversified Approach. Many job seekers think that they can just try one or two opportunities for finding a job and dismiss many other options. Forgetting to diversify your job search can be a big mistake, particularly when it is a statistical fact that many traditional job hunting tactics are not always effective.

4. Unrealistic Expectations. Time and time again, job seekers will start off a job search with such high hopes. Even when the economy is looking up, it takes time, patience and the right tools to find the right job.

5. Lack of Preparation. It is amazing how job seekers will put so much emphasis on the résumé but forget to (a) have a strategy in place for how to use the résumé, (b) fail to prepare for both phone and face-to-face interviews (they are not the same thing and, therefore, require different preparation), and (c) have a complete misunderstanding of the industry they are targeting. The worse thing you can do it limit yourself and by failure to be prepared, you are doing exactly that.

Although many people adapt well and are able to learn just as quickly in a group setting, others may benefit more from a one on one approach. This enables them the opportunity to ask more questions without worrying about taking up too much time in a class room setting from the other individuals.

Career Coaching

Career coaching is for those individuals who are in jeopardy of or have already lost their job, or are currently in a career transition state. You will be assigned a career coach who will act as your mentor throughout your employment transition process. This can include a choice of services such as:

  • Development of a career plan and employment strategy
  • Instruction on modern day job search techniques
  • Resume and cover letter writing and update skills
  • Guidance in researching industries and/or job specific companies
  • Networking skills and the importance of
